More about Mark

I have an academic background though not directly related to anything I do today – a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in History of Science and a B.A. from the University of Chicago. In my graduate studies, I  explored paradigm shifts that occurred with introduction of new communications technologies in the sixteenth century. Now I spend my professional life in the middle of another great paradigm shift – from the printed word to on-line technologies. Only this time, none of us know how the story will end.

The continuity between my current and earlier interests is my preoccupation with academic institutions. This is the only sector that has ever interested me. For a while, I worked as an administrator. For the past 15 years I have worked as a consultant, getting a bird’s eye view of the shifts and challenges of contemporary educational bureaucracy. My career-long interest, and the one that motivates this blog, is the enormous challenge of marketing education in a modern image-dominated culture.
